I’ve created this appliance in order to display video ads on a schedule on the big screens in the entertainment complex where I work. There is flexible scheduling, scrolling text, flash-widgets, as well as the ability to run not only local movies but broadcast events in real time. This is only a client part but it can be run as a standalone system with a single screen.
The basis of the system – a couple of small bash-scripts to manage schedules, launch media player (VLC) and browser (display scrolling text and flash).
Documentation is missing here, but if someone is interested in this system, I’ll explain, how it works :)

Warning! It’s not fully automated app with blackjack and hookers buttons and checkboxes. It’s just a proof-of-concept (but fully functional) bash script, that rules well known programs.
System is configured for FullHD resolution.
In order to get flash widgets work you must change the IP settings by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F6.

Тут есть система расписаний, бегущая строка, виджеты, а также возможность запускать не только локальные видеоролики, но и трансляции событий в реальном времени.
Основа системы — пара небольших bash-скриптов, управляющих расписанием, запуском медиаплеера (VLC) и браузера (отображение бегущей строки и флеш).
