openSUSE 12.1 KDE3/LXDE/XFCE-Remix

Published by pmller
Based on openSUSE 12.1 32-bit x86

This openSUSE 12.1 Live CD is a pure remix of openSUSE 12.1 Main-Repo software with a few packages from OBS. It contains rather basic KDE3, LXDE and Xfce desktops as well as Fvwm, Icewm, Windowmaker, Enlightenment 17, Openbox and Fluxbox as very lightweight alternatives. KDE3 is the default desktop and KDM the default displaymanager (LXDM is available as alternative).

Release notes

This openSUSE 12.1 remix comes with Firefox, Midori and W3m for web browsing, Thunderbird, Claws-mail and Alpine for emailing, Gftp and Filezilla for ftp browsing, KDE3-Konqueror, Thunar, PcManfm and Midnight Commander as file managers and Qt4- and Ncurses-Yast for system configuration and package management. If something goes wrong, the Live-Installer is always available from the “Miscellaneous” section in Yast, even in text mode. If you need mp3 support for Clementine and Parole, it can be downloaded from the openSUSE non-OSS repo (as the official openSUSE 12.1 Fluendo mp3 plugin). This appliance also contains the Printer-Parallel-Support package for older printers.

The following software has been added from various OBS repos: Sax3 from OBS Sax, Fluxbox and Obmenu from OBS X11 and Knetworkmanager-kde3, Knetworkmanager-openvpn-kde3, Knetworkmanager-vpnc-kde3 and Kinternet from OBS KDE3, a basic Enlightenment 17 desktop from “Enlightenment Nightly” OBS. All other software is openSUSE 12.1 Main software.

Within the realms of possibility, I included most language packages for the corresponding applications, e.g. the „translation-common" packages for Firefox and Thunderbird and a lot of the so-called “*-lang” packages. The exception to this “rule” is KDE3 (with regard to the kde3-i18n packages), it is only available in English and German as a result of the limited CD space (English is default).

Please note that this software remix does not contain e.g. OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Digikam, Gimp, K3b, Amarok, Chromium and Seamonkey due to space constraints.

Changelog for version 0.0.18:
I added the latest updates from openSUSE and OBS (e.g. Firefox 10.0.2 and Thunderbird 10.0.2, kernel and systemd were also updated) and removed the Mozilla OBS repo. Please note that most wifi-related software and firmware packages are not part of this appliance (e.g. openSUSE 12.1 rpms “kernel-firmware”, “ndiswrapper” as well as non-free wifi firmware from openSUSE OSS Main and Packman), so that a lot of wlan cards will not work with it.

This software remix comes with absolutely no warranty, to the extent permitted by applicable law.

Rudi PittmanRudi Pittman,

Any chance of an update for opensuse 12.2? I’m unable to locate an opensuse 12.2 lxde livecd to save my life.

pmllerpmller,

At first I wanted to publish an update to this KDE3/LXDE/Xfce remix for openSUSE 12.2. But then I discovered a few bugs in KDE3 (at the moment it is not possible to safely remove usb sticks), in LXDE (which is generally not in good shape) as well as in SuseStudio which prevent me from doing so in a reasonable amount of time. Today I tried to generate an LXDE/Xfce spin, but SuseStudio suddenly did not know its own X11 and base patterns anymore and announced a “package conflict” because I have chosen these patterns. Moreover it is really time-consuming to check whether all necessary -lang packages have been selected or not. Moreover I tried to find Xarchiver or Squeeze for using one of them together with Thunar but they are gone in 12.2, I would have to choose Gnome’s File-Roller for that purpose. The list goes on and on, this socalled “based_on_openSUSE theme” comes to mind, which does not pull in the necessary gtk2, gtk3 and icon themes so that Xfce looks like crap at first glance with missing symbols everywhere. To cut long story short: There will not be a 12.2 version with regard to this remix from me.

OpenSUSE 12.2 works very well – with KDE4 (I did not test Gnome3 so I cannot say anything about it.). openSUSE’s Xfce and especially openSUSE’s LXDE do not have the same quality. There are better implementations out there. With regard to the current state of LXDE in openSUSE 12.2 I am asking myself why they did not abandon it.

pmllerpmller,

I have just published an openSUSE 12.2 Live CD with LXDE and Xfce as the main desktops. Although there are a lot of bugs in it, I hope that it might be useful for cloning or for improving the momentary state of LXDE and Xfce in openSUSE 12.2.

Mickey MiloMickey Milo,

Love the system, but shame that I cannot get online with it! It does not pick up any of my wifi cards adapters. can i clone this system and add gnome network manager? i hope so :-)

pmllerpmller,

Thanks for your feedback. Although I’ll add Networkmanager-KDE3 and some wifi software to this appliance in the near future, it could be that needed wifi firmware is missing. So, what you can do, is to clone this appliance and add e.g. Networkmanager-Gnome to it and all the wifi firmware you need for your wifi cards. Please note, that I cannot add Networkmanager-Gnome due to the fact that the needed “gnome-icon-theme” package has a huge size of 66,7MB. It is too big for this kind of non-Gnome CD.
To be honest: Networkmanager was left out, because it was not automatically chosen by the SuseStudio package management system. I did not notice that. This is also a result of the fact that I do not own one wifi card at the moment.
For me, this appliance is mainly an installation CD, and I only remixed it, because there exist no official KDE3, Xfce and LXDE openSUSE installation CDs until now.
But, nevertheless, this appliance could also be seen as a building block for your personal appliance. Feel free to change what you want, feel free to clone it. :-)

pmllerpmller,

Postscriptum:
Note that also the firmware package “kernel-firmware” is missing, it is also not installed by default. Moreover, no other wifi firmware has been selected.
So it is very likely that this appliance (version 0.0.7) cannot be used for wifi purposes.
Do you own a wifi card which is “normally” supported by openSUSE without ndiswrapper or undistributable firmware?

SamisSamis,

For something similar to this, but more geared towards Developers, try my Xinux, it has a full featured KDE3 and Xfce desktop, and plenty of developer tools/IDE’s included. as i write this the 12.1 version is building, with luck it will be out tonight, otherwise it will be out tomrrow
I like this system as well :)

Mickey MiloMickey Milo,

Wow, looks very promising. Not IT litirate, but if I can install another easier network manager, then this looks like the best linux system that I have seen so far. I will keep my fingers crossed about installing an easier network manager. Well done on this great system. Fantatsic!!!!!!!!!!!
