miniSUSE
MiniSUSE comes with all the great packages you might need. It offers you a Swiss army knife for all your Linux needs – still it is small enough to fit a CD/DVD or USB drive. You can use it to rescue systems, format drives, check sensors or hack whatever you want. If you are looking for a small, but extremely useful Linux distribution you can get up and running in seconds from the media of your choice, look no further :)
Now with IceWM and YaST2!

I wanted to creat a vista home basic operating disc can anyone give any tips how to do this
You can’t.
The miniSUSE page is online again! The “support” site will be updated this week.
Question: How do I start after login?
It depends on what do you want to do :)
If your question is “how do I start the GUI?”, then you simply run `init 5` as root, and you’ll have it :)
Thanks I keep on typing ‘startx’ I’m still mac’ish
bold Question: <bold How do I start after login?
Can u make os installed size of 120 mb & Feture Like Rdekstop to Connect Windows Server………. Thanks
Thanks viral shah for the feature request!
rdesktop is now available in version 3.0.4!
Unfortunately, the overall size of the appliance can not shrink without losing applications. I had wars in my had a lot of times, but miniSUSE is rather a swiss army knife – and not an extremely small appliance that fits into every little place.
Please feel free to post (or send me) tips and suggestions on shrinking the appliance – but if you need a smaller os than this, you should probably clone miniSUSE and drop out everything you do not need.
Thanks!
Thanks….
Thanks hgj for putting this out for all to use. I really want to give it a try but I can’t get it to boot. Downloaded the “USB and Flash” image and used imagewriter to write to usb stick. All this went fine but at boot I get to GRUB loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, please wait… then Error 21. That’s it. Any help with this would be great. Thanks
itwwhite, try to copy the image with dd to your USB drive. Do it like this:
dd if=[image-file] of=[drive]
where [image-file] is your uncrompressed raw image of MiniSUSE (MiniSUSE-*.raw),
and [drive] is your USB stick (eg. /dev/sde). Run `tail -f /var/log/messages` as root, and plug in your stick and observe the screen for the drive name. Be careful with this, as if you specify one of your internal drives, you can overwrite your system and break stuff!
Feel free to contact me if anything goes wrong again!
what is the login and password
If you scroll up a little, you can see it under the Accounts section (below Technical Details):
User Password
linux MiniSUSE
root MiniSUSE
it doesnt work
Please do not forget, that the passwords are case-sensitive!
not good. does not work the way it should. sorry, but i think you should just make it like
all the rest of the Linux systems. the looks i mean… could work if
also killed my computer. wont shut down.
I can only help if you provide more details on your problem.
The look in this appliance is not the main feature…
i am a real noob on linux. i installed and entered the login and password , can u help in further installation.
You do not have to install it – okay, it depends:
With the live CD, you can run it “live” without installation (losing all your changes with each restart).
With the Disk image, you can copy it to your system, and then you already have an installed MiniSUSE.
Or you can copy it to a USB drive and run it from there.
will it fit on a 2gb netbook?
The raw image is 1.2GB at the moment, so yes, it will fit, and you’ll have ~800MB of free space after the first run.
Error running testdrive? Hmm.
We just passed one thousand downloads! Thank you guys!
It comes up with a countdown timer from 10 – 15 mins and then a blank screen. Reloading doesn’t help.
What countdown do you mean? The boot menu countdown? Or after booting up, it counts down in the console?
Please provide a bit more information on that, so I can help you with your problem.
How come testdrive doesn’t work? does it just not work in IE?
You do not get anything, or the appliance fails? I did not try it in IE but it works fine on Firefox and Chromium. Try it with a different browser!
works in chrome too
Studio is not compatible with IE
hey hgj can you help me building my os????…. plz reply me fast, as sooon as you can.
What kind of help do you need? did you try the support?
you should add some different themes in it.
What do you mean by themes?
I’ve tried to use a splash background, but I stayed with the minimal design, so only a “fancy logo” survived :)
i think this os is missing something… you should add some more details in it
Feel free to suggest changes and recommend packages! :)
can you help me?
on my OS it says
the process for the desktop protocol died unexpectedly
in the desktop folder in KDE, do you know how to fix this?
Sorry, I do not know that much of KDE.
Please try to ask on some openSUSE support forum, mail-list, IRC etc. – or contact me through my profile page, instead of the appliance’s comments section.
Refer to http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Support
Good luck!
plz look at my OS at http://susegallery.com/a/qKUXzw/dragon-os
Memory usage on this puppy? Wanna see how light it really us.
Hello Prizm!
free sees the memory usage as follows:
total: 245 MB, used: 62 MB, free: 183MB
buffers and cached: 51MB
(This is from the disk version)
Ouch. That won’t fit on my Pentium 3 :(
How much memory do you have there? 64MB?
Yes.
I know Tiny Core can fit X11 and some apps into there all in RAM, Debian will boot with half as much and still run X, and DSL-N boots too.
I didn’t know chameleons were so fat. Diet time, let’s SIGKILL services.
Did you take a deeper look, and cloned the appliance, so you can tweak the memory usage? – Just a suggestion, if you have time for it.
On the other hand, this version does not even have X … Memory usage might just get bigger…
Check out minisuse.hgj.hu – I’ve just uploaded the new CMS and one more tutorial.
Remember, you can try out MiniSUSE (and all other appliances) without burning (or copying to a thumbdrive) with QEMU! :)
i’ve downloaded live cd/dvd version. Burned cd. i am opening bootloader and choose MiniSUSE Os. Loading something and asking username and pass. i am logging with root. no problem here. But i cant see desktop how can i go desktop?
MiniSUSE does not have a graphical desktop environment. It is not a small SUSE for production environments or home use – but a small and fast Linux distro, that has everything you need, without the unnecessary things, that includes the desktop environment.
If you want to try openSUSE, I recommend downloading a live Gnome/KDE CD – but if you want to use MiniSUSE with a desktop, clone the appliance and tick one of the environments in software tab, burn and try.
is there any screenshot?

A WINRAR IS YOU!
You won one of the spots in the contest ;)
Thanks :) You gave me an idea – working on the new release
Added some packages that were missing. Feel free to recommend other packages :)
Did you work all Hungarian letters and symbols with AltGr in Testdrive?
What do you mean? If you can not get Hungarian letters in Testdrive, make sure, to set the keyboard language:
After that you can simply use your Hungarian keyboard. Does this solve your problem?
I selected Hungarian in Testdrive.
Before I build my appl. I selected Hungarian keyboard, language, timezone, etc.
I haven’t tested your appl. I tested in my appl. only. I don’t think so there would be any difference because the Hungarian letters (like éáű) are working. But not all! (íűő not) And the biggest problem is the missing symbols with AltGr. Are those buttons working for you?
How can I try your appl. in Testdrive? I just started SuSEStudio, yesterday.
I guess, the letters űőí will not work in Testdrive at all. This Testdrive is only for quick testing purposes, that is why the scrolling is a bit buggy too.
If you connect to the appliance with SSH in testdrive, you will get perfect characters with űáéúőóüöí and so on – and also AltGr symbols will work, but that needs X, that is why it only works that way.
11.3 version coming soon!
This is a Hungarian version (Hungarian keyboard and time zone) – but you can change all those settings with one command. Feel free to clone the appliance on the other hand :)
